Choosing a Charleston wedding venue is one of the most consequential decisions in your planning process. Not because there aren’t excellent options, but because there are so many that genuinely differ in feeling, scale, and what they ask of your vision. Some Charleston wedding venues arrive with atmosphere already built in. Others are blank slates that reward couples with a strong creative point of view. The seven venues below are the ones I return to, recommend most, and have seen hold a wedding day with real grace.
Lowndes Grove -A Waterfront Charleston Wedding Venue

William Aiken House – Historic Elegance in the Heart of Downtown
Located just off Upper King Street in downtown Charleston, the William Aiken House is one of the most recognized Charleston wedding venues for a reason. The pale yellow exterior, antique furnishings, original artwork, and architectural detailing give it a quality of place that’s hard to manufacture and the lush private courtyard, anchored by a mature magnolia tree, photographs with the kind of depth that feels specific to this city.
A two-story carriage house and multiple indoor and outdoor spaces make it genuinely versatile. Catering, also through Patrick Properties Hospitality Group, carries the same standard as Lowndes Grove. The venue has been recognized by both Martha Stewart Weddings and Brides Magazine as one of South Carolina’s premier wedding venues.
Capacity: Multiple configurations available. Inquire directly for current numbers.
Cannon Green Events – A Blend of Historic Elegance and Modern Charm
Cannon Green occupies a distinctive space among downtown Charleston wedding venues, historic in character, warm and unhurried in atmosphere, and contemporary enough in its finishes that couples with a more modern aesthetic feel at home here. Located in the Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood, it’s walkable to coffee, dining, and nearby accommodations.
The Garden Room, the open-air courtyard, and the larger Trolley Room give the venue real range, intimate gatherings feel contained and considered here, while larger celebrations have room to breathe. Artisan catering with fully customized menus rounds out an experience that never feels generic.

Middleton Place – A Historic Garden Setting for Your Wedding
Middleton Place is not like other Charleston wedding venues. Situated along the Ashley River, it is home to one of the oldest landscaped gardens in America, sculpted terraces, manicured grounds, moss-draped oaks, and water features that have been in place for centuries. For couples who want their wedding to exist inside something with genuine history, this is it.
Ceremony locations include the Parterre and Butterfly Lakes, the Secret Gardens, the Middleton Oak, the Octagonal Garden, and the Crane Pool, each with its own quality of light and framing. The Inn at Middleton Place offers on-site accommodations for the couple and guests, which makes a full wedding weekend here easy and contained.

The Cottages on Charleston Harbor – Coastal Chic and Intimate Weddings
Just across the bridge from downtown in Mount Pleasant, The Cottages on Charleston Harbor offer something the city’s historic venues can’t: open water views of Charleston Harbor with an intimate, private atmosphere built around the property itself. The nearby cottage accommodations keep the couple and close guests together in a way that makes the wedding feel more like a weekend than a single day.
Two outdoor ceremony and reception spaces offer flexibility. The Grand Lawn accommodates up to 150 guests, while the Harborside Lawn is well-suited for gatherings of up to 70. Catering is selected from several vetted services, with menu options tailored to the couple’s preferences.
Legare Waring House – Classic Southern Elegance for Your Wedding
Set within Charles Towne Landing, the Legare Waring House is among the most naturally atmospheric Charleston wedding venues, surrounded by gardens, moss-draped trees, and an oak-lined avenue that leads to the two-story mansion. It’s the kind of setting where the landscape does most of the work, and the light in the late afternoon through those oaks has a particular quality worth planning around.
The venue offers two separate getting-ready suites, keeping the morning unhurried and the couple’s spaces distinct. The fountain patio and grounds provide multiple ceremony and portrait locations within a single property. The privacy here, nestled within a state park, gives the day a quietness that’s rare in a city this popular.
Gadsden House – A Restored Charleston Gem for Your Big Day
The Gadsden House is a two-story restored venue in the heart of downtown Charleston, original hardwood floors, crystal chandeliers, working fireplaces, and a courtyard garden shaded by palms and filled with florals. It is smaller in scale than some of the waterfront estates, which is precisely its appeal for couples planning a more intimate celebration.
Large Southern piazzas, a lush gated courtyard, and separate onsite suites for the bridal party make the logistics of the day feel considered. Its central location means guests have easy access to downtown Charleston hotels and dining throughout the weekend.
Finding the Right Fit
Every venue on this list holds a wedding day well. The question is which one holds yours, which space reflects the feeling you’ve been building toward, the guest count you’re working with, and the kind of atmosphere you want your people to move through.
If you’re getting married at any of these Charleston wedding venues and looking for a photographer who knows them well, I’d love to hear about your day.
