Charleston has a way of making every season feel considered. The Spanish moss or the harbor light, it all changes by the month, and so does the way your wedding will feel. If you’re in the middle of choosing your date, this is for you.
As a Charleston wedding photographer, I’ve fallen in love with the southern charm of this beautiful city and the incredible weddings celebrated here each year. When planning your Charleston wedding, one of the most important factors to consider is the season you’re hoping to celebrate in. To help you decide, I’ve compiled a list of pros and cons for each season, giving you key factors to consider when choosing your date and venue
Spring, March – May
Spring is Charleston’s most sought-after season and it earns that reputation.
What works in your favor:
The city is in full bloom; azaleas, magnolias, wisteria climbing ironwork gates. Venues like Lowndes Grove and Middleton Place were practically designed for this light. The humidity is low, the afternoons are long, and an outdoor ceremony feels genuinely effortless rather than aspirational.
What to plan around:
Spring fills up quickly for venues, vendors, and hotel blocks alike. If you have a Charleston wedding photographer, planner, or florist in mind, an early inquiry goes a long way. Pollen season is real, so it’s worth building in small considerations for guests with allergies. Early mornings and evenings can carry a chill, which is its own kind of charm if your aesthetic leans layered.

Summer, June – September
Summer is the least booked season for weddings in Charleston, but that doesn’t mean it’s the wrong choice. It means it rewards couples who plan with intention.
What works in your favor:
The days are long. You have more time for portraits, for a lingering cocktail hour, for the kind of unhurried evening. Charleston is genuinely beautiful in the summer because of that golden atmosphere.
What to plan around:
The heat is real, and the humidity is serious. An indoor ceremony and reception keeps your guests comfortable and keeps the day from being defined by the weather. Hurricane season begins in June so wedding insurance is worth it, and a flexible timeline is worth even more. A fifteen-minute buffer on your ceremony start can make all the difference when a summer storm moves through and moves on.

Fall, October – November
Fall is Charleston’s second most popular season, and for good reason.
What works in your favor:
The temperatures soften. The greenery stays lush and deep. The light shifts into something warmer and lower, the kind that photographs with a richness spring can’t quite match. For couples who want the ease of spring without the crowds, fall is often the answer.
What to plan around:
Hurricane season extends through November, so patience and a contingency plan are part of the preparation. Fall weekends book nearly as quickly as spring, so early planning still applies. Sunsets come earlier. Coordinating your timeline with your Charleston wedding photographer and planner to protect the light is something worth discussing before you finalize your day-of schedule.

Winter, December – Feb
Winter is Charleston’s quietest season, and that quiet is its own kind of gift.
What works in your favor:
Venue and vendor availability opens up. The city is less crowded, which makes logistics easier for your guests. There’s an intimacy to a winter wedding here. The low light, the warmth of candlelit rooms, the way the city feels a little more like a secret in the off-season.
What to plan around:
The days are shorter, so an earlier ceremony start, closer to 3 p.m., helps protect portrait time. A first look is worth considering if you want more flexibility with light. Charleston winters are mild by most standards, but a light layer for you and your wedding party is a graceful touch, and blankets at an outdoor reception feel considered.
No season is the wrong choice here. The best date for your wedding is the one that reflects how you’ve imagined it. The light you want, the pace you want, the feeling you’ve been working toward.
If you’re planning a Charleston wedding and want to talk through what your day could look like, I’d love to hear about it.
