5 Mistakes To Avoid During Your First Look

1) WINGING IT

When it comes to weddings, it’s important you have everything planned out…including your ‘First Look’!

Where will you be doing the ‘First Look’?

Will you both turn around at the same time or will the bride walk up behind her groom and tap his shoulder?

All of these details are crucial and having it planned out helps for a perfect ‘First Look’ session!

2) NOT HAVING ENOUGH TIME

Rushing through portraits sounds like a nightmare alone. Could you imagine rushing through a ‘First Look’?!

Giving you and your groom time to see each other and embrace each other helps with all of the nerves! When I talk with my brides about their wedding day timeline, I ask if they are doing a ‘First Look’. If they are, I make sure we have plenty of time for this part!

3) BRINGING OTHERS ALONG

This is your moment. Not the wedding parties, not the families, yours. This part of your day should be private and just for you and your groom. If for some reason someone wants to watch and you don’t want them to, I got you! 🙂

4) NOT BEING ALONE

This is similar to the previous mistake except for the fact it involves the photographer. When you do a ‘First Look’, chances are you want to be alone and exchange words.

Either having your photographer step out for a few minutes or having your photographer far away with a longer lens could solve this problem. I want you and your groom to have your private time together, I know how important that is!

5) SKIPPING THE FIRST LOOK

Some brides may want to skip the ‘First Look’ for traditional reasons but let me tell you, don’t! I never want to force my brides into doing something they don’t want to but I also don’t want them to miss out on this important moment.

There are three main reasons why you shouldn’t pass on the ‘First Look’:

  1. You get more photos! Imagine having 40% more portraits of you and your groom. These will be the perfect ones to hang on your wall as well! When I did a ‘First Look’, those were my favorite images from my whole day! They were so special and it was my favorite part of the day.
  2. Nerves…gone! Let me tell you, I was so nervous before my wedding. I can’t imagine feeling that way walking down the aisle. When I did my ‘First Look’, my nerves were gone as soon as I saw Matt. It was incredible. I walked down the aisle so happily and guess what…Matt still teared up both times. He doesn’t tear up much but his lip was quivering and it was the cutest thing!
  3. This is what convinced me to do a ‘First Look’, our own time together! My wedding day went by so fast and the only time Matt and I had together ALONE was the ‘First Look’. Can you imagine not having any private time with your groom on your wedding day?! The day that is about the two of you!
