Including Your Furry Friend In Engagement Photos

If you know me well, you know I am obsessed with pups! I try to encourage all of my couples to include their little friend because they are part of their story…and they make the cutest photos!

Today I’m sharing a guide on how to include your pup in your engagement session.

1. LETTING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER KNOW

One of the first steps in my engagement session process is sending out a questionnaire. In the questionnaire I ask if you want to include your furbabe but if your photographer doesn’t do this, make sure to ask!

The next step in the engagement session setup process is picking a date and location. Making sure your location is pet friendly is super important.

2. BRINGING HELP

During the session, not every image will include your dog. You’ll want to focus on those special moments with just you and your fiance, it’s your engagement session after all! Typically I like to include your pet during the first 30 minutes of your session and then from there on out, we get those super lovey photos with just you two.

But if your pup is hanging around you during the entire session, those lovey moments can feel a little hard to get when you’re distracted. Bringing along a friend or family member who feel comfortable holding your pup can be helpful when we need to get the other shots.

3. PREP + TO-BRING LIST

Making sure your pup is all ready for the session can make a world of a difference. Keeping their body full and hydrated, and if they’re still a puppy, making sure they got a nap or two in.

Here are some must-bring items:

  • A nice collar & leash (leather or neutral colored)
  • Accessories (Bow ties, bows or florals)
  • Pack a bag with: Treats, water, bowl, waste bags, and toys

Here are some of my favorite shops for cute pup accessories: Crew La La, Rover Boutique, & Etsy

4. KEEPING IT FUN

Letting your dog enjoy being out is so important! Whether they are running around, rolling around, having fun, just let them be dogs! It makes for the most authentic photos. Sit back and relax, your photographer will handle all of the hard work on getting them to look at the camera and smile! 😉
