There’s truly nothing like a Charleston engagement session. The city is full of character, cobblestone streets, pastel facades catching the morning light, the salt air drifting in from the water just a few blocks away. Every time I pick up my camera here as a Charleston engagement photographer, I find a new corner that feels made for exactly this kind of evening.
Jillian and Holden’s session gave us two sides of Charleston in one day. We started in the quiet streets of the historic district Charleston before heading out to Sullivan’s Island for a completely different kind of afternoon. Two locations, two outfits, and one couple who made all of it look effortless.
Jillian & Holden’s Story
Jillian and Holden met the first week at Clemson. Same dorm hall and the inevitable in hindsight. Holden stopped in to say hello one afternoon, showed up with his roommate the way freshman boys do when they’re trying to be casual about not being casual at all. Jillian called dibs immediately. They spent every single day together after that and couldn’t quite manage to stay away from each other.
When it came time to propose, Holden had one problem: he cannot keep a secret to save his life. They had talked about it. The how, the where, and somehow Jillian let herself not know anyway. He chose Church Street in downtown Charleston and the morning could not have been more perfectly her. They walked the Battery, grabbed iced coffee and breakfast, took their time. Private, unhurried, no audience. Exactly what she had always wanted.
A Charleston Engagement Session Across Two Sides of the City
For their charleston engagement session, we started in the pockets of the historic district that I keep coming back to. The quieter streets. The cobblestones, the old plaster walls, the way evening light comes in so lovely. If you’re searching for downtown Charleston engagement photos, this is exactly the kind of setting I have in mind.
Jillian wore a white eyelet halter dress for this part of the session. Scalloped hem, simple and completely right for where we were. Holden kept it classic in a navy blazer and cream trousers. We wandered slowly and let the streets do what they do.
From there, we headed out to Sullivan’s Island, and everything shifted. The light opened up, the air changed, and Jillian changed into a white mini dress with a white cover that would dance with the wind. Sullivan’s Island engagement photos have a quality that’s completely their own because of the sea, the wide sky, the sand and it felt like a different world entirely, even though we were barely twenty minutes from where we started. Holden spun her in the sand. She laughed. The two of them are easy with each other in the realest way, and Sullivan’s Island gave them room for all of it.
Why I Love A Classic Charleston Engagement Session
Charleston has become one of my favorite places to photograph couples and I don’t think that’s going to change anytime soon. Every time I’m here, the city offers something new. A different angle of light through the iron gates, a quiet street I hadn’t noticed before, a moment between two people that only happens because the place invited them to slow down.
That’s what I love about a good ole charleston engagement session specifically. The city does so much of the work on its own. It asks couples to be present inside it, and that’s exactly where the best photographs live. As someone who spends so much time here doing Charleston engagement photography, it never feels like showing up to work. It feels like coming back to somewhere I already belong.
Counting Down to Their Lowndes Grove Wedding
I am already looking forward to Jillian and Holden’s summer wedding at Lowndes Grove. As their Lowndes Grove wedding photographer, I can already picture the light on that lawn in the late afternoon. If you know the property, the live oaks, the Ashley River, the way it holds everything so quietly…you already understand why it’s one of the top venues in Charleston. After an evening like this one with these two, I have a feeling their wedding weekend is going to be something worth carrying for a long time.
