Important Questions To Ask Your Wedding Photographer

There are a lot of questions you might have for your wedding photographer, and it’s super important to get all the details before you hire them to capture your big day. Here’s a list of questions you should be asking to make sure you’re on the same page!

AVAILABILITY

Is our date available?
This is probably one of the most important questions to ask—after all, it’s your wedding date! If the photographer isn’t available, there’s no point in asking further questions unless you’re able to switch your date.

Photography is one of the most essential services for your wedding day (right alongside your wedding planner—don’t forget that step!). Make sure they’re available before diving deeper into the details!

What happens if the photographer is ill?
This can vary from photographer to photographer, but it’s crucial to know what their plan is in case they fall ill.

For example, I always have a backup photographer with a similar style to mine just in case. If they don’t have an answer to this question, it’s a major red flag—definitely worth reconsidering your choice! Yikes!

Will you have an assistant?
Some photographers work with assistants, and some don’t. If your photographer offers this option, it’s definitely worth considering! There’s usually an additional fee, but in many cases, it’s totally worth it.

The main deciding factors are the size of your wedding and whether it spans multiple locations. If you have a large guest list or multiple locations, having an assistant can make a huge difference.

If your budget allows, I’d always recommend going for an assistant. You’ll get two cameras capturing all the action, meaning more angles and more photos! And honestly, who can say no to more photos of your big day?

EXPERIENCE

What is your style?
Every photographer has a unique style, whether it’s traditional, film inspired, bright and airy, or moody and dark. Choosing a photographer whose style resonates with you is key to ensuring you love your photos. Make sure their style aligns with your vision for your wedding day! Not only style and color wise, but also how they work with couples during posing.

How many weddings have you shot?
Experience matters! Hiring a photographer with solid wedding experience means they can provide you with vendor recommendations, create an ideal timeline, and deliver beautiful, well-thought-out photos.

If you’re considering a photographer friend or a newer photographer, that’s totally fine too! Just be mindful that with more experienced photographers, there’s often a higher price tag—but that comes with the benefits of their expertise, from prep to execution to editing.

Pick the photographer who fits your budget and feels like the right match for you!

Do you use backup equipment?
This is like a backup for your backup, and it’s essential! I always bring two cameras, multiple lenses, SD cards, and a hard drive to ensure your photos are safe and backed up ASAP. It gives both of us peace of mind on your big day!

How long until I receive my images?
This can vary, but the typical turnaround time is about 6-8 weeks. I aim to deliver within 4 weeks because I know how eager couples are to relive their beautiful day! Keep in mind, though, other deliverables like photo books or prints may take longer to prepare and deliver.

COLLECTIONS

What all do you provide in your packages?
Make sure you’re getting the full value from your wedding photographer by checking what’s included in the collection. Look for coverage time, delivery methods, and prints. Most couples don’t want to deal with printing their photos after the wedding, so having the photographer handle that for you is a big plus! Some photographers (like myself), create a custom collection for every couple because every wedding is different!

When it comes to prints, I use a professional lab to ensure your photos look stunning and last for a lifetime. Make sure the collection includes everything you want.

How many photographs will we get?
You don’t want to find out weeks after your wedding that you only received 50 images! Typically, you should receive around 500-800 photos, but it can vary depending on the photographer and the collection choice. Make sure you’re clear on this before booking!

Do you charge a travel fee?
Some photographers charge based on how many miles/hours they need to travel to your venue, while others may not. If your venue is a few hundred miles away, you should plan to cover hotel, flight, or gas expenses outside the package price.

Some photographers offer a “destination wedding package,” while others handle travel costs on a case-by-case basis. If you love a photographer and your budget allows, don’t hesitate to splurge on them—this is your wedding day after all, and you deserve the best!

How much is the deposit to book our date? Can we pay in increments?
This is an important question that many brides forget to ask (but trust me, you want to know)! Most photographers require a retained between 15-50% of the total package price.

Knowing the retainer amount will help you plan your budget. Many photographers also allow clients to pay in installments because we know how expensive weddings can get. It’s always good to ask when the full payment is due, as most photographers require it about a month before the big day.

These are just a few of the key questions to ask your wedding photographer. But beyond all the technical details, make sure you choose a photographer based on these personal connections:

  • Is there a genuine connection between the two of you?
  • Do your personalities match, and do you feel like you could become great friends?
  • Do their answers to your questions align with your wedding vision?
  • Are you comfortable with their workflow and how they plan to handle the entire process?
  • Do you absolutely love their style?

When you find the right photographer, it’ll feel like a perfect fit for you and your big day!
