Questions To Ask An Editorial Wedding Photographer Before Booking

Choosing an editorial wedding photographer means you’re looking for someone who can capture your day with a blend of timeless elegance and modern artistry. It’s more than just photos! It’s about telling your story through stunning imagery. But with so many options available, how do you ensure you’re making the right choice? Here are the key questions to ask an editorial wedding photographer before booking.

AVAILABILITY

Is our date available?

This is one of the most important questions to ask an editorial wedding photographer! If the photographer isn’t available, there’s no point in asking further questions unless you’re able to switch your date. Photography is one of the most essential services for your wedding day (right alongside your wedding planner!). Make sure they’re available before diving deeper into the details!

What happens if you become ill?

This can vary from photographer to photographer, but it’s crucial to know what their plan is in case they fall ill. For example, I always have a backup photographer with a similar style to mine just in case. If they don’t have an answer to this question, it’s a major red flag—definitely worth reconsidering your choice!

Will you have a second photographer?

Some photographers work with assistants (second photographers), and some don’t. If your photographer offers this option, it’s definitely worth considering! There’s usually an additional fee, but in many cases, it’s totally worth it. The back of the aisle shot, your partner getting ready, and just having a backup person there! If you have a large guest list or multiple locations, having a second photographer can make a huge difference. More coverage means more angles and more moments captured.

Do you offer engagement sessions?

When booking your wedding photographer, be sure to make sure an engagement session IS included! Why? It’s the perfect opportunity to get comfortable with their style and how they work, while they also get to know you and how you interact in front of the camera. Plus, engagement sessions are often included in many packages—so with me, it’s already guaranteed!

And I’m sure you already feel like being in front of the camera is awkward right? That’s why I’ve put together this guide on how to feel comfortable in front of the camera!

EXPERIENCE

What is your style?

Every photographer has a unique style, whether it’s traditional, film wedding photography, bright and airy, or moody and dark. Choosing a photographer whose style resonates with you is key to ensuring you love your photos. Not only should you love their editing style, but also how they work with couples during posing and throughout the day.

How many weddings have you photographed?

Experience matters! Hiring a photographer with solid wedding experience means they can provide you with vendor recommendations, create an ideal timeline, and deliver beautiful, well-thought-out photos. If you’re considering a newer photographer, that’s totally fine too! Just be mindful that more experienced photographers come with the benefits of their expertise, from prep to execution to editing.

Can you share galleries?

After a discovery call, I love to share a few full wedding galleries so the couple can see exactly what it’s like to work with me. While Instagram and portfolio highlights are great, they don’t always show the full experience. Seeing an entire wedding day from start to finish gives you a true sense of their approach, how they capture different moments, and the overall feel of the images.

Also, keep an eye out for styled shoots—they look beautiful but aren’t the same as a real wedding day! Everything is perfectly planned, without the natural flow and challenges of an actual celebration.

Do you use backup equipment?

This is like a backup for your backup, and it’s essential! I always bring two cameras, multiple lenses, SD cards, and a hard drive to ensure your photos are safe and backed up ASAP. It gives both of us peace of mind on your big day!

How long until I receive the images?

This can vary, but the typical turnaround time is about 6-8 weeks. I aim to deliver within 4 weeks because I know how eager couples are to relive their beautiful day! Keep in mind, though, other deliverables like photo books or prints may take longer.

COLLECTIONS

What do you provide in your collections?

Make sure you’re getting the full value from your wedding photographer by checking what’s included in the collection. Look for coverage time, delivery methods, and prints. Many photographers, including myself, offer film wedding photography options for a timeless touch and curate collection options for every single couple because every wedding day is different!

How many edited images will we receive?

Typically, you should receive around 500-800 photos, but it can vary depending on the photographer and the collection choice. Make sure you’re clear on this before booking!

Do you charge a travel fee?

Some photographers charge based on how many miles/hours they need to travel to your venue, while others may not. If you love a photographer and your budget allows, don’t hesitate to splurge on them—this is your wedding day after all, and you deserve the best!

How much is the retainer?

Most photographers require a retainer between 15-50% of the total collection price. It’s always good to ask when the full payment is due, as most photographers require it about a month before the big day.

These are just a few of the key questions to ask an editorial wedding photographer. But beyond all the technical details, make sure you choose a photographer based on these personal connections:

  • Is there a genuine connection between the two of you?
  • Do your personalities match, and do you feel like you could become great friends?
  • Do their answers to your questions align with your wedding vision?
  • Are you comfortable with their workflow and how they plan to handle the entire process?
  • Do you absolutely love their style?

When you find the right photographer, it’ll feel like a perfect fit for you and your big day!
