If you’re dreaming up ideas for your own South Bend wedding, Abbie and Joe’s day was the perfect balance of tradition and personality. From a full Catholic ceremony at St. Joseph Church to a candlelit celebration at The Armory in South Bend, their wedding was a thoughtful blend of old-world romance and modern sophistication.
Getting Ready + Classic Details
Abbie wore the Romina Gown by Jenny Yoo, a sculpted silhouette with a draped cowl neckline that felt effortlessly timeless. Her lace slingbacks by Sam Edelman and a spritz of Prada perfume added just the right touch of elegance. Her bouquet was a lush all-white arrangement that tied in beautifully with the pale pink and black color palette.
Her bridesmaids wore pale pink gowns, carrying delicate bouquets of pink and white florals. Joe and the groomsmen wore classic black tuxes. Joe in a white boutonnière, the rest in pink to perfectly complement the group’s polished look.
A Traditional Ceremony in the Heart of South Bend
The celebration began at the family house and then for the ceremony, moved to a traditional full Catholic mass at St. Joseph Church, one of the most iconic ceremony venues in the area. It was the perfect setting for their meaningful vows, filled with emotion and surrounded by loved ones.
The Party Bus + Reception at The Armory South Bend
After the ceremony, the couple and their wedding party hopped on a party bus and kicked off the celebration early! We all headed to St Marys for portraits which provided such a consistent and beautiful setting for portraits.
The Armory South Bend wedding venue is known for its industrial charm and open, dramatic interiors. Abbie and Joe transformed the space with soft pink florals, sleek black accents, and an abundance of candlelight. The design was a dreamy mix of modern and romantic, exactly what you picture when you think of classic elegance with a twist.
During introductions, the wedding party entered the reception holding large custom signs, adding a fun and unforgettable twist to the night. From the first dance to the last song, Abbie and Joe were side by side, soaking in every second together. You could tell how much they truly enjoyed their own party, which is exactly how it should be.
Dinner, Drinks, and Dessert
Guests were treated to flavorful hors d’oeuvres like marinated sirloin beef kabobs, mini smoked chicken quesadillas with pepper jack cheese, and fried mac & cheese bites with pulled short rib. For dinner, Tuscan chicken with roasted Roma tomatoes and artichoke hearts or seared salmon with a white wine sauce, both served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and broccolini.
Their signature cocktail was a tequila Paloma. A perfect citrusy, refreshing drink for a summer wedding.
Instead of a formal cake cutting, they offered guests two sweet treat options: vanilla wedding cake with buttercream and chocolate cake with a rich chocolate mousse filling. A casual but elevated way to end the evening on a sweet note.
Final Thoughts from a West Michigan Wedding Photographer
As one of many West Michigan wedding photographers who has the joy of traveling to photograph celebrations like this, South Bend is such a hidden gem for couples looking for a mix of timeless tradition and modern design. South Bend wedding reception venues like The Armory offer a blank canvas with so much character, and when you bring in thoughtful lighting, florals, and personality like Abbie and Joe did, the result is simply stunning.
