I once had a friend ask me, “How do I get my guy to feel excited about taking photos? I want him to feel good and want to be there when we get our portraits taken!”
One of the main reasons why guys aren’t too thrilled with getting in front of the camera is because they don’t know what to expect! I’m sharing ways to help your man feel pumped for your upcoming session!
1) SHARING THE WHY
In any relationship, communication is key! Tell him why you chose your photographer and explain their style to him!
These days, sessions aren’t just pose, look at me and snap. I want you two to be focused on each other and your love for one another. It’s your time off to spend two hours with each other, embrace that!
Express why these images are so important to you. He’s your man, he cares for you and when you tell him these details, he will understand!
2) SHOWING YOUR FAVES
This part will help him understand what to expect from a session. Sit down together, grab a treat and show him your favorite engagement sessions from your photographer’s blog or gallery! Explain to him what about the photos make them your favorite.
Imagine going to a session…this person you have never seen before starts to take photos of you. How comfortable would you feel?
More than likely, the bride is the one who picks out the photographer. Therefore, the groom doesn’t know who this photographer is, doesn’t even know what they look like, and chances are has never seen their work. It is so important to know who is behind the camera and how they work so everyone is on the same page.
Show him that is is possible for the guys to look awesome in images! Head over to the blog!
3) PLAN FOR AFTERWARDS
Turn your session into a date night! Don’t just plan for a two-hour photo session, plan for something fun afterwards such as a movie, dinner or even both!
When you have something awesome to look forward to, it makes everything else go by easier and quicker! You two will already be in the lovey dovey mood, so why not?!
4) ARRIVE EARLY
When you arrive 10-15 minutes earlier than your session start time, it helps ease the nerves. You’re already there and you are ready to spend quality time with each other!
Running behind schedule sours your mood…and that will show in your images! But sometimes life happens and that is okay. Just don’t let it ruin your day!!
5) PATIENCE IS KEY
Girls, I know you want your guy to be thrilled for the session and chances are, he will loosen up! Just be patient with him and encourage him!
It’s normal to feel awkward in front of the camera, that’s how the first 15 minutes feel in all honesty. But when you focus on each other and not the photographer, it will show! You can do it!!
So, do your homework girls! Make sure you prep your groom! It should only take 15-20 minutes!
Being a photographer, I have spent so much time making my couples feel confident in front of the camera. The point of the engagement session is not only to give you beautiful photos but to also give you the confidence and experience in working with each other.
When the wedding day rolls around, we got this in the bag and you two will rock it!
